End-of-the-Year Project: My Eighth Grade Year
You will be putting together a scrapbook of this school year. Your scrapbook must be neat, colorful, uniquely designed and include the following items. For each item, you need a drawing, a photograph or some other form of illustration. You also need 3-5 sentences for each item. You can not just have pages covered with pictures!! The finished product must be at least 13 pages.

Due to the field trips last week, I am having to adjust my plans. See last week’s blog for this week’s agenda. We got too far behind last week to have any quizzes, but we will have at least one this week.

We will be continuing the Anne Frank play. There will probably be at least 2 quizzes during the week over what we’ve read. In conjunction with the WWII background information, we will be looking at how propaganda was used during the war and discussing the different types of propaganda. The students will be tested over the types of propaganda and completing a project at a later date.

We will be working on adjectives and adverbs.

We will begin a unit on genres of literature.

We will begin a project, called “Create a New World,” that they will be working on for the remainder of this grading period.

January 8-January 18

We have been studying World War II and reading the play based on Anne Frank’s Diary. Since the Writing Exam was Wed., January 15th, we have also been discussing the important components of an essay.

Jan. 11- Quiz on WWII background–Many did not study and did poorly on this quiz.

Jan. 16-Quiz over Scenes 1 and 2 of the play–Many did poorly on this quiz as well, which would indicate that they are not paying attention as we read and discuss the play.

January 18th- We will be going to the library. There will be an AR requirement for this 9 weeks. I am going to give the students the choice of completing AR by earning a designated amount of points or by completing the novel descriptions as I have required in the past.

Monday, Sept. 24: Practice using vocabulary, Review the types of nouns and pronouns, Finish reading and discussing “The Tell-Tale Heart” and write a reflective response to the story

Tuesday, Sept. 25: Quiz over Lesson 3 Vocabulary (10 words) and nouns and pronouns, notes on figurative language, examine sample works for use of figurative language, introduce figurative language project choices (tentative due date–Wed. Oct. 3rd)

Accelerated Class: quiz will also cover the different functions of nouns in pronouns in sentences.

Wednesday, Sept. 26: Test over nouns, pronouns, literary elements, Lesson 3 Vocabulary (Accelerated: test will also cover the functions of nouns and pronouns)

Introduce new vocabulary, Practice with verbs, Expository writing vs. Persuasive writing, Poetry and figurative language

Thursday, Sept. 27: Vocabulary, verbs, essay writing, figurative language

Friday, Sept. 28: AR Test is due!!! Quiz types of essays, figurative language, verbs, Lesson 4 Vocabulary

This week in language arts we will be reviewing the different types of pronouns, types of sentences, run-ons and fragments. We will also begin reading poetry and identifying the different forms of figurative language. The students will be working on a group project in which they are writing a skit that they will be performing for the class Monday, September 10th. Friday, September 7th, they will have a test which will cover the first 2 vocabulary lessons, the types of nouns and pronouns, types of sentences, and the literary elements.

This is going to be a very busy week. We will be working on our research projects which will be presented next Monday and Tuesday.

Tuesday, May 8: We will be watching a movie (”Separate But Equal”) related to their history lessons. This movie will take most of the day. We will be discussing the events of the movie, and they will be completing a worksheet as they watch the movie.

Wednesday, May 9: Field Trip to Chickamauga Battlefield

Thursday and Friday: We will be working outside to beautify our campus.

Two more weeks until the CRCT!!

We will be working really hard to get fully prepared for the CRCT. Our main focus will be test-taking strategies and reading comprehension. We will be finishing the play based on the life of Anne Frank and working on our propaganda projects.

We are sending a parent letter home today (March 16) regarding the dates of the CRCT. Please be sure that you have no appointments scheduled for your child on these dates. It is very important that each child is present for each test! Each child that does not pass the Reading and/or Math sections of the CRCT will be required to attend summer school.

This week we have been preparing for the CRCT. We have gone over the Benchmark Exam from last week and discussed test-taking skills. We have also been studying World War II and the types of propaganda in conjunction with the Anne Frank unit. The students are supposed to design an advertisement based on one of the propaganda types–rough draft is due Monday, March 19.
